SAMBALPUR: The additional district and sessions judge court of Kuchinda on Wednesday awarded death sentence to a 50-year-old man and life term to his 28-year-old son for the murder of three of a family over a property dispute at Lapada village in Sambalpur district three years back. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict.
"While pronouncing the judgment, the additional sessions judge, Rajkishore Lenka, said death sentence is awarded in 'rarest of the rare' cases and this is one such case," said additional public prosecutor Rabindra Naik.
The crime took place on October 21, 2020. The convict, Navin Dehury, assisted by his son Hemanand Dehury, murdered Pirabati Behera (55), her daughter Sabitri Sahu (35) and son-in-law Gridhari Sahu (41).
Murder a fallout of property disputeSabitri and her husband, a native of Kirmira under Laekera police station limits in Jharsuguda district, were staying with Pirabati to look after her and her farmland.
Navin had a property dispute with Pirabati. On the day of the crime, Navin and Hemanand attacked Girdhari with an axe and killed him while he was working in the farmland. Later, the duo attacked Sabitri, who was collecting water from a tube-well in the village, and killed her. And when Sabitri’s mother Pirabati rushed to rescue her daughter, the duo attacked her and killed her as well.
The villagers informed the police, following which the two were arrested. The imposed fine will serve as compensation for the bereaved children, said Naik.
